After sorting out the usual formalities , I headed to the Chengdu airport hotel £45 including breakfast. I had booked requesting a high up airport facing view. Despite noting this on the booking and also calling the (UK???) call centre , I was initially given 628. This was on floor 6 of 10. A bit of google translate , some pointing ,plus a tip to the bell team had a better room secured. 930 – double bed room.

The top (10th) floor is “family room only ” I was told. 948 would have been a perfect room as is right at the end of the corridor. Any room , even numbered on floors 8 or 9 would work. They also have a rollaway bed if so needed. This would be an extra charge

The room view is of one runway only, the other being out of sight. Everything appeared to taxi past / use the visible runway , at some point. There’s a very limited room service menu. I stashed my home brought beers/soft drinks in the mini fridge to avoid the hotel charges. I did not use any of the many coffee shops as I didn’t want to leave the window. Hot/spicy and some “interesting”food dominates here, which made breakfast different to say the least !!!

There is an airport shuttle service though this was in a Lexus style SUV when I left.

Movements were steady, with many late night arrivals. The use of the free in room wifi , FR24. and sbs combo ensured I hit the pillow the right side of 2am both nights. Departures started around 630 am, with arrivals mostly starting from around 0830 continuing until very late.

Sichuan and Air China are the main domestic players here . Also of note were a few China United aircraft, with most of the Tibet Airlines fleet seen. There are also a number of the rarer Air China A319 which do not venture too often into the more major airports. This is a busy airport with a movement around every 2 minutes with long queues for departure at peak periods. 

No views of the actual terminal but a  view of the departure runway allowing all movements to be seen. You need an even room in the range *02 to *40 ideally on the 9th or 10th floor however the 8th floor is adequate.

If the airport is on the usual South Westerly operations traffic on the arrival runway cannot be seen however the departure runway is directly in front of you so you will eventually get most movements. The majority of departures are close enough to be  read off from the room during day light.
