H Sovereign Bali
The H Sovereign is one of the closest hotels to the airport. There are rooms with views here as well as the bonus of a rooftop pool where photography is possible. The hotel is ideal for spotting but is probably not the best for a family holiday due to the distance from the beaches and resorts.
The hotel is pretty basic by Western standards, breakfast is good but dinner is reported as average. Beers are available in the hotel and are cheap by European standards. There are a number of shops within a 5 minute walk where you can stock up with snacks etc.
Rooms 5021,5023, 5025 and 5026 are the best rooms, with 5023 the preferred option for spotting. When landing from the left all arrivals can be seen on short final and as they roll out on the runway through various gaps in the trees. When landing from the right, the majority of arrivals turn off prior to the hotel meaning that you have to be quick to identify them between the gaps in the trees. All departures can obviously be seen in this direction once airborne.
The rooftop pool lends itself to a relaxing stay at this hotel. All movements can be seen from the roof, the wifi works well although there are no charging points up here. If taking off from the right photo opportunities are excellent from the pool area.
The hotel is available to book as a 6 hour transit stop with free airport transfers for around £25 or around £40 per night for a full stay through Booking.Com which offers great value.

Patra Bali Resort
This resort is the recommended Bali spotting hotel if you have your wife or family in tow. The luxury resort comes highly recommended for both a stand alone holiday hotel and also spotting. The hotel is a 5 minute taxi ride from the airport and is situated on the Kuta Beach resort. The hotel offers free breakfast and wifi as standard. This is the closest hotel to the airport on the Kuta beach strip.
The hotel has a happy hour in the poolside bars from 1700-2100 with great views of the sunset (and airport movements)
The movements can be seen from any of the3 pools, bars and beach, during the day a good telescope will read off the majority of movements.
The excellent restaurant also gives views over to the runway.
A number of Garden Villas offers views of the action (villa 204 has confirmed views). These villas have four poster beds, private garden and balcony with good views of arriving/departing traffic depending on the runway in use.
A five minute walk down the beach from the hotel brings you to an unofficial viewing area where photography is possible with caution (one isolated report tells of police questioning in spotter in this area)
